THE CYBER INTERVIEW the airlines.“ It’ s really going to be a key competency – a key capability – to be able to use AI to defend, protect and enable cybersecurity going forward.”
For a mission-critical sector, one thing that cannot be compromised on is crisis management – the emergency response and recovery processes.
Deneen says that regardless of the type of disruption, United Airlines exercises“ the same muscle to keep the airline up and running”.
This is a combined effort. A high stakes game in which incident response, technical recovery and leadership all play their crucial parts. An all-hands on deck effort, with the members understanding the decisions they have to make under pressure while fully recognising the responsibility and accountability that they have to carry out within each of their functions. Such a response is hard to coordinate on the fly. Luckily, they don’ t have to.
“ I think the best thing that we’ ve done is we’ ve integrated that into the way we work at United and we practise it,” Deneen says.“ We run exercises and drills, we call them EOC – emergency operation centre drills – that have cyber components, technology components, AI components, exercising those muscles.
