Cybersecurity is a scary topic. Regardless of the trillions of dollars on the line if a hacker gets through to an organisation’ s sensitive data, it’ s also a tricky topic to understand in terms of how offenders identify gaps in a technology landscape. It can be incredibly technical and, admittedly, some conversations are reserved for those who know exactly what they are talking about. Vasu Jakkal, former Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Security, aims to combat that.
" As a security professional, I see it as my responsibility – or really, my duty – to educate people on the role security plays in using and building AI safely,” she says.“ I believe when you start with security, it becomes the biggest catalyst for innovation and it can propel you forward.
“ There’ s a massive opportunity for us to do AI right by starting with security. If we use the technology in a safe, responsible way – with security and privacy at the start – we will build great AI.”
For years, cybersecurity was treated as a highly-technical issue – a conversation strictly reserved for IT departments and security practitioners. However, as the tech landscape evolves, the narrative has shifted somewhat. There are two themes in how security is being discussed today: as a crucial tool for risk mitigation and as a powerful catalyst for business innovation.
“ It’ s important for people to understand their role in security because it’ s not just a security team that needs to be in the know,” Vasu continues.
