As the manufacturing industry continues to adopt greater levels of technology and connectivity , a robust cyber security strategy is essential . Trends such as remote access and Industrial Internet of Things ( IIoT ) connectivity make manufacturing more efficient , but they also create new points of vulnerability that can be exploited .
There has been a marked increase in cyberattacks targeting manufacturers in the last year . For instance , in the first quarter of 2020 attacks targeting the manufacturing sector accounted for 11 % of all cyber attacks that occurred across all industries , according to the Association of Packaging and Processing Technologies ( PIMM ) 2021 Cyber security : Assess your Risk report . By the second quarter of 2020 , cyber attacks targeting manufacturers accounted for 33 % of all incidents across all industries . This is a growing concern for manufacturers with an increasing number of companies reporting they have been victims of cyber attacks .
